Driving time: approximately 1 hour
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a scenic drive to Umbwe Gate (1,640 m). Once there, luggage is distributed among the support team. The trail ascends through lush rainforest along a narrow, winding path to the first camp.
Elevation gain: about +1,300 m
Hiking time: 5 hours
After breakfast, the hike continues through one of the most beautiful sections of the Umbwe Route. Moss-covered erica trees create a fairytale-like forest atmosphere. The path climbs steeply, including a 20 m rock step with carved footholds for safe passage. As you gain altitude, enjoy views of Mount Meru before reaching Barranco Camp in the early afternoon.
Elevation gain: about +1,050 m
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
With impressive views of the Breach Wall, the route leads toward the Lava Tower. A rest stop at 4,640 m provides a good break before descending to the camp at Moir Hut.
Elevation: +700 m / –500 m
Hiking time: 6–7 hours
Early in the morning, enjoy sweeping views over the Amboseli Basin and the northern ice fields. The Northern Circuit begins here, heading eastward across open rock slabs. Upon arrival at Pofu Camp, a wide panorama opens up over Kenya’s safari plains.
Elevation: +300 m / –300 m
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
Today’s highlight is crossing the Buffalo Ridge, followed by a descent toward Buffalo Camp for a short rest. The landscape becomes drier, with sparse vegetation and occasional springs. Depending on energy and motivation, there is an option to hike further up to the Kibo Saddle before settling at Third Cave Camp.
Elevation: +150 m / –250 m
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
The vegetation fades into a barren, desert-like alpine zone. The trail now follows part of the Rongai Route, which we continue to climb pole pole (“slowly, slowly”) until we reach the simple School Hut.
Elevation gain: +900 m
Hiking time: 3–4 hours
After a short New Year’s Eve rest, the summit ascent begins around midnight. Equipped with headlamps, determination, and excellent support, the climb continues past Gillman’s Point (5,681 m). Here you will need to draw on your last reserves to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After a brief but memorable stop for summit photos, descend to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.
Elevation: +1,145 m / –2,050 m
Hiking time: 10–12 hours
The final descent begins with a traditional farewell ceremony with guides and porters. This is a good time to express appreciation for their support through tipping. At Mweka Gate, your vehicle will be waiting for the transfer back to the hotel.
Elevation loss: –2,050 m
Hiking time: 5–6 hours
After breakfast, transfer to the airport or continue with your onward safari program.
